PRACTICAL GUIDE
A VIN consists of WMI, VDS and VIS, with a mathematically calculated check digit in position 9.
The World Manufacturer Identifier is assigned by the competent authority and identifies the manufacturer. If the manufacturer produces fewer than 500 vehicles worldwide each year, the third character is 9.
Learn moreFive alphanumeric characters describe the vehicle’s general characteristics. Any unused positions must still be filled so the section remains five characters.
Learn moreCharacters are converted to numerical values, multiplied by fixed position weights, totalled and divided by 11. A remainder of 10 produces X.
Learn moreThe Vehicle Indicator Section uniquely identifies the vehicle together with WMI and VDS. The last four positions must be digits.
